BELL RINGING

Bell Ringing

There are six bells; the oldest (No.3) dated 1633 and the heaviest weighing 12cwt. The fourth bell has been recast but it thought to date from about 1400. The steel frame and sixth bell were installed in about 1920. There is also an Ellacombe chiming apparatus.

We have an active band of ringers across the Six Pilgrims. Practices are usually held at 6.30 on Tuesday evenings and beginners are very welcome. We haven’t achieved a very high technical standard but we do enjoy it! Strength is not important; it’s the technique and the timing and anyone can ring from age 9 to 90.

There are also five bells at North Barrow (where we sometimes practice) and three each at Lovington and South Barrow (which has the oldest bell in the Six dated 1350).
